이영조 Young-Jo Lee

Lee studied at Yonsei University in Seoul and the Hochschule fur Musik und Theater in Munich (1975) under Carl Orff and Wilhelm Killmayer. He then studied at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago (1986) where he completed his D.M.A. and subsequently he taught as a professor. In 1994, he returned to South Korea where he became a professor and the Dean of the Korean National University of Arts.
Currently, he is also the Chairman of both the Korean Branch of the Beethoven Jubilee GmbH (BTHVN), Germany and the Board of Korean Art Education Organization Ministry of Culture, Sight Seeing and Sports Republic of Korea.
Young Jo Lee studied composition of western music however he wants to free himself from the pressures of both western style conventions and Korean tradition and to blaze new trails. In the background of Young Jo Lee’s compositions, there is always the thought of how Korean music can find its place amongst world music.
With this idea in mind, he established a new musical language. As a result, he has been honored several times for his commitment to Korean music.
His specialty is the symbiosis of the powerful logic found in German music and Korean emotionality. His chamber, choral and orchestral music is already known outside South Korea. his opera Hwang-Jinie, in particular, has been performed in Peking (2000), Tokyo (2001), Los Angeles (2003), Moscow (2003), Hanoi (2004), Gwangju (2007) and Torre del Lago (2014) following its premiere in Seoul in 1999. He was invited to Contemporary Music Festivals in Moscow, Maastricht and Univ. of Wisconsin as the “Composer in Residence”.
이영조는 혼합주의적 양악전통을 계승한 작곡가이다. 이 전통은 서양음악과 한국 전통음악을, 과거와 현대의 기법을 혼합한다.
이영조는 민요, 농악, 풍류방음악, 판소리, 범패, 가야금 음악, 시조 잡가 등 실로 방대한 분야의 음악적 요소를 작곡의 바탕을 삼았다. 소재 면에서의 혼합뿐만 아니라 작곡기법 면에서도 과거와 현대를 혼용해 쓰면서도 그것이 잡다한 나열에 그치지 아니하고 오히려 높은 예술적 가치를 발하는 것은 선율의 성격과 진행에 따라 절묘한 화현을 구사하기 때문이다. 전통적인 선율과 리듬을 직접적으로 쓰면서도 거기에 그 자신만의 독특한 현대감각의 화성을 입힌다. 그의 음악은 까다로운 현대적 기법을 사용한 경우에도 청중들의 반응을 얻는다. 그의 음악이 청중과 가까울 수 있었던 것은 한국 양악작곡가들에게서 자주 보이는 세 가지 미학적 관점 (친근성, 민족성, 현대성) 중 친근성이 포기되지 않았기 때문이다. 그는 과거와 현재는 시간적으로 떨어져 있으나 감성적으로는 공존, 공유해야 한다고 믿는다. 따라서 그는 현대적 작품을 쓰면서도 필요시에는 조성음악도 마다하지 않고 쓴다. 그의 음악은 쉽게 감성에 젖지 않으며 현대의 현학적 유혹에 빠지지 않는다. 이는 그가 시대의 사조에 의해 휩쓸리지 않은 것을 의미했으며 이렇게 해서 그는 고급스러운 작곡가가 되었고 그렇게 만들어진 그의 음악은 자신의 연주자와 청중을 만들어 냈다. 이영조는 서양음악을 공부한 사람이다. 하지만 그는 여타 작곡가들과는 다른 사고를 했고, 하고 있다. 이영조는 서양음악사의 강요로부터, 그리고 동양(한국)음악사로부터 자유로워지기를 바래왔다. 2021년 11월, (사)한국코다이협회 이사장으로 취임하여 활동하고 있다.
김희철 Hee-Churl Kim
예술총감독 Artistic Director
Heechurl Kim is a professor of music school of Shenyang University in China. He established Chun-Song Foundation, which is a music foundation in Jeju, and began to hold Jeju International Choir Festival & Symposium and World Youth Choral Festival & Competition in Jeju. As artistic director of both choral festivals, he works hard to invite various and professional choirs from Korea and abroad and to spread out the professional choral education and choral music which including messages through the choral symposium to the society. World Youth Choral Festival & Competition in Jeju, which held since 2018, has the purpose of cultural exchange through choral music and self-fulfillment through performances of children and youth choirs form Korea and abroad.
After he studied abroad, he came back to Korea in 1997 and worked as the conductor of World Vision Korea Children's Choir until 2015. He was recognized his musical ability through having more than 1,000 performances and he is still leading out to publicize the importance of education through choral music for children and youth.
He became a professor of Georgia Central University since 2020. Currently, he also serves as a choir conductor of Myungsung church, music director of Korea Youth Choir and United Singers, vice-president of UNESCO Jeju association, board member of Korea Church Music Association, Board Member of Korea Federation for Choral Music, and more.
지휘자 김희철은 현재 중국 심양대학 음악대학 교수로 재직 중이며, 2015년 제주도 음악재단법인 천송재단을 설립하여 제주국제합창축제&심포지엄과 제주세계청소년합창축제&경연대회를 시작하였다. 그는 두 합창축제의 예술총감독으로 활동하며, 국내,외 다양하고 전문적인 합창단들을 초청하여 합창심포지엄과 함께 전문적인 합창교육과 메시지가 있는 합창음악을 사회에 보급하려 노력하고 있다. 2018년부터 시작된 제주세계청소년합창축제는 국내,외 어린이,청소년합창단들의 합창을 통한 문화교류와 연주를 통한 자아성취를 도모하고 있다.
유학 후 귀국하여 월드비전선명회합창단의 상임지휘자를 맡아 2015년까지 1,000회가 넘는 연주를 통해 그의 음악적인 부분을 인정받았으며, 특히 현재까지도 그는 어린이와 청소년들의 합창을 통한 교육의 중요성을 홍보하는데 앞장서서 활동하고 있다.
2015년까지 월드비전세계합창제 음악감독으로 활동하며, 수 많은 국내,외 연주와 세미나를 통해 합창교육이 얼마나 중요한지 알리고 있다. 제주에서 2017년에 재단법인 천송재단 소속 천송어린이합창단을 창단하여 예술 감독으로 활동하고 있다.
현재 그는 중국 심양대학 음악대학 교수, 예술학교 예주랑 교장, 제주국제합창축제&심포지엄 예술총감독, 제주세계청소년합창축제&경연대회 예술총감독, 한국국제합창협회 부이사장, 한국교회음악협회 이사, 유나이티드싱어즈 음악감독, 재단법인 천송재단 이사 및 음악감독, 유네스코제주협회 부회장, 연세음악아카데미 지휘자, 명성교회 지휘자이며, 2019년 남한의 청소년과 탈북 청소년을 함께 구성하여 코리아청소년합창단을 창단하며 ‘평화의 메시지를 노래를 통해 나눈다‘는 사명을 갖고 지휘자로도 활동하고 있다.
티제이 하퍼 T.J.Harper

T. J. Harper is Associate Professor of Music, Director of Choral Activities, and Chair of the Department of Music at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA. Choirs under the direction of Dr. Harper have performed at regional and national conferences for the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) International performances by invitation include Austria (2015), Czech Republic (2015), Spain (2013), and Italy (2011).
He has received invitations as conductor, clinician and lecturer throughout the United States and internationally with engagements in Argentina, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, and Venezuela.
Dr. Harper received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California where he graduated with honors. He was the Chair of the ACDA International Activities Committee, the past Director of the ACDA International Conductors Exchange Program, and most recently completed a term as a Board Member for the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM).
티제이 하퍼는 캘리포니아주 로스앤젤레스의 Loyola Marymount University의 음악학과장, 합창활동감독 및 음악교수로 재직 중이다. 그의 지도아래 활동하는 합창단들은 전국음악교육협회 지역학회(NAfME), 미국합창지휘자협회, 그리고 호주(2015년), 체코(2015년), 스페인(2013년), 이탈리아(2011년)로부터 초청받아 여러 국제무대에서 연주하였다.
그는 초청지휘자, 강사, 심사위원 등으로 미국뿐 아니라 해외에서 활발한 활동을 이어나가고 있다. 아르헨티나, 칠레, 중국, 코스타리카, 쿠바, 독일, 홍콩, 인도네시아, 이탈리아, 멕시코, 한국, 스페인, 스웨덴, 대만, 태국, 베네수엘라를 포함한 여러 나라로부터 지휘자, 강사 등 다양한 역할로 초청받아 활동하였다.
하퍼 교수는 그가 수석으로 졸업한 서던캘리포니아대학교에서 음악학 박사를 받았다. 그는 미국합창지휘자협회의 국제교류활동회장으로, 미국합창지휘자협회 세계지휘자교류프로그램의 감독으로도 역임하였으며, 가장 최근에는 세계합창총연맹(IFCM) 이사로 재직하였다.
